Core Vital Signs
| Parameter | Operational Range |
|---|---|
| Heart Rate | 60–140 bpm 1 |
| Respiratory Rate | 10–30 breaths/min 1 |
| Body Temperature | 100–102.5°F 1 |
| Capillary Refill Time | < 2 seconds 2 |
| Mucous Membranes | Pink / Moist 2 |
Cardiovascular Assessment
- Large breed resting HR: 60–100 bpm
- Small breed resting HR: 90–140 bpm
- Elevated concern: >160 bpm at rest
- Weak pulse = possible shock state 2
Respiratory Status
Normal
- Quiet breathing
- No visible distress
ALERT CONDITIONS
- Labored breathing
- Open-mouth breathing at rest
- Cyanotic (blue/gray) gums 5
Temperature Classification
| Range | Status |
|---|---|
| < 99°F | Hypothermia risk |
| 100–102.5°F | Normal operating range |
| 103–104°F | Heat stress / monitor |
| > 104°F | Veterinary intervention recommended |
| > 106°F | Medical emergency |
Perfusion Indicators
- Pink gums = adequate oxygenation
- Pale gums = shock or blood loss
- Bright red gums = heat injury / inflammation
- CRT >2 seconds = poor perfusion 2
Hydration Assessment
- Moist gums = normal hydration
- Skin tent return = rapid (<2 sec normal)
- Sticky gums = dehydration indicator
- Sunken eyes = advanced dehydration 3
Critical Emergency Triggers
IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED:
- Collapse / unconsciousness
- Seizures
