🏃 Performance & Recovery Tool

Post-Exercise Assessment

Most healthy dogs should begin returning to their normal baseline shortly after activity. Use the assessment below to evaluate recovery.

How To Assess Your Dog

  • Returns to normal behavior
  • Comfortable movement
  • Normal appetite
  • Normal hydration
  • Recovery within 30–60 minutes
  • Mild fatigue
  • Temporary stiffness
  • Slower recovery
  • Reduced enthusiasm
  • Persistent exhaustion
  • Reluctance to move
  • Limping
  • Abnormal behavior
  • Poor recovery

Hydration Assessment

💧 Gum Moisture

Gums should be moist and slippery.

⏱ Skin Elasticity

Skin should return quickly when gently lifted.

🚰 Water Intake

Monitor normal drinking habits.

🟡 Urine Color

Pale yellow is generally normal.

Changes in hydration status may affect recovery, performance, and heat tolerance.

Recovery Monitoring

The Purina 9-Point Body Condition System is one of the most widely used methods for evaluating canine body fat and overall fitness. Compare your dog to the descriptions below and identify the score that most closely matches their appearance and physical condition.

Muscle Soreness Assessment

🟢 Mild

  • Temporary stiffness
  • Normal after strenuous activity
  • Improves within 24 hours

🟡 Moderate

  • Noticeable soreness
  • Reduced activity
  • Protective behavior

🔴 Severe

  • Persistent limping
  • Difficulty rising
  • Pain with movement
  • Declining performance

Heat Stress Assessment

🌡 Excessive Panting

❤️ Elevated Heart Rate

🧠 Disorientation

⚠️ Vomiting or Weakness

Heat stress can rapidly progress to a life-threatening emergency. Seek veterinary care if symptoms worsen or body temperature becomes elevated.

Return-To-Work Checklist

Dogs should return to normal baseline function before resuming strenuous work or training.

🚨 Seek Veterinary Care If You Observe:

⚠️Collapse

Sudden weakness, inability to stand, loss of consciousness, or unexpected collapse may indicate a serious medical emergency.

Seek veterinary care immediately.

🦵Persistent Limping

Limping that persists, worsens, or affects weight-bearing may indicate a significant orthopedic, muscular, or neurological injury.

Discontinue activity and schedule veterinary evaluation.

🌡️ Severe Heat Stress

Excessive panting, weakness, vomiting, collapse, or elevated body temperature may indicate heat-related illness.

Begin cooling measures and seek veterinary care immediately.

🫁 Respiratory Distress

Labored breathing, blue or gray gums, excessive respiratory effort, or difficulty obtaining air are emergency conditions.

Seek veterinary care immediately.

🐕 Refusal to Bear Weight

Complete refusal to place weight on a limb may indicate severe pain, ligament injury, fracture, or other serious condition.

Seek veterinary care immediately.

🧠 Neurological Abnormalities

Loss of coordination, seizures, abnormal behavior, disorientation, or sudden neurological changes require prompt assessment.

Seek veterinary care immediately.
