Ideal condition for dogs is BCS 4–5.2
Visual BCS Reference (Purina System)
BCS 1–3
Underweight – ribs, spine, and pelvic bones easily visible.
BCS 4–5
Ideal – ribs palpable, waist visible, abdominal tuck present.
BCS 6–9
Overweight to obese – fat deposits present, waist absent.
Field Interpretation Guide
| BCS Range | Status | Field Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Underweight | Possible illness, malnutrition, or high metabolic demand |
| 4–5 | Ideal | Optimal working condition and health balance |
| 6–9 | Overweight/Obese | Increased risk of joint strain, heat stress, and disease |
Operational Insight
Consistent visual scoring improves early detection of weight-related health issues.
Body condition is a stronger predictor of health outcomes than body weight alone.1
